Albania is unique and extraordinary, a travel experience unrivalled elsewhere. A land of contrasts, wild and yet welcoming, sun and snows, beaches and mountains; its history both fresh and ancient, scary and friendly, tragic and triumphant. We have medieval bridges, towns and castles – from Berat, Gjirokaster, Shkodra, Korca, to “Roman” sites in Durres, Butrint and Apollonia, beach cities in Saranda and Durres, lakes and crystal blue waters from mineral springs, old churches and mosques, museums and bunkers and of course lots of bars and restaurants.
The Albanian Riviera is home to some of the most stunning beaches in the entire Balkan Peninsula, if not Europe, they run the entire length of the Albanian coastline from Shkodra in the north to Saranda opposite Corfu. There’s sandy, pebbly, gravelly, forested, popular or remote. Enjoy being in Ksamil, Saranda, Borsh, Himara, Jal, Dhermi or Vlora in the south, or Durres, Shengjin, Kune, Rana e Hedhun, Velipoja, Shiroka further north. There’s Pogradec on Lake Ohrid and many other sea and lakeside towns offering rest and relaxation, stunning views and water sports, music festivals, famous faces, crystal seas, and of course, lots of sun.
The highest mountains in the North are part of the Albanian Alps, the peaks of the Balkans, often inaccessible in winter months. Unrivalled beauty surrounding villages such as Theth and Valbona where hikers and visitors are welcome to enjoy the spectacular views, stunning nature, home-made cooking and hospitality, making the area a favourite paradise for hikers, nature-lovers and adventurers.
Enjoy fish and seafood freshly caught in the morning and cooked before your eyes for lunch. Incredible flavours, daily, direct from the sea – squid, octopus, shrimps and fish with amazing mouth-watering salads, lemons, fruits and goats cheeses and breads all invite you to come back for more… and more.
And to drink! Nothing like a local beer, costing much less than a euro, (0.70) or delicious local wines or even a local raki – try one made from mulberries, or plums. All these served with warm hearts and smiles: what could be better?
